Chiropractic literally translates into “done by hand” from the Greek words cheir (meaning “hand”) and praktos (meaning “practice”). As hands-on practitioners, one of our primary forms of treatment is the adjustment.
An adjustment is a high velocity (quick), low amplitude (short) thrust applied to restricted joints in order to restore motion and proper biomechanics.
Why is this important?
Joints are made for motion. In fact, there are tons of receptors in and around your joints that take in information about movement and send it to the brain. The brain uses sensory information from joints to move and nourish the body. Sometimes joints become hypomobile, or don’t move as well as they should. This can happen due to many stressors such as an injury, poor posture, over exertion, sedentary behavior, or even from a poor diet. When a joint stops moving, the brain no longer receives all the sensory information it needs.
As a result, muscles can become tight to protect what the brain now considers a damaged area. This area may also be tender to touch. Over time, the joint will begin to degenerate due to excess stress and lack of nutrients. This breakdown in communication between the body and the brain can lead to injury, degeneration, inflammation, and pain.
We adjust restricted joints to restore normal motion and activate those receptors we mentioned before. The goal is to restore and maintain the connection between the brain and body. Adjustments have been shown to improve range of motion, decrease pain, and ease tight muscles…changes that often contribute to other health bonuses like improved sleep, decreased illness, and an increased sense of wellbeing.
