Best Nutrition Store in Chattanooga

The BEST Nutrition Stores in Chattanooga

Let’s face it, it’s easy to get lost in the world of nutrition. When it comes to nutrition stores, one of the best tips we can give you is that every store is different. They have different products, sales techniques, education levels, and “ideal” customers.

Nutrition Stores can be an intimidating place for anyone new to health and wellness. The vast number of products, brands, advertisements, gimmicks, and promotions can leave you asking, “where do I even start?”

One of the first steps in figuring out where to start is understanding the question, “why do I need it?”

We spoke with the managers of Vitamin Shoppe, 5 Star Nutrition, and Nutrition World to help clarify their mission, who is the right customer for their store, and how they’re different from one another. Each store brings value to different types of customers and can be great places to shop depending on your goals.

In the following article, you will learn about the top three nutrition stores in Chattanooga and what makes them different.

Vitamin Shoppe prides itself on being a specialty destination for people striving to lead a healthy life. With over 700 locations nationwide, Vitamin Shoppe is positioned to bring supplements and nutritional products to the masses. Because Vitamin Shoppe is such a large company, they rely on local managers and team members to spread their message.

Heidi is the manager of our local Vitamin Shoppe. She started working there five years ago because she wanted to work at a place that spreads a message of health. She is a certified holistic health coach with a passion for whole food nutrition. Her personal mission which drives her is to “help people on whatever journey brought them to her door.”

Heidi takes the message of Vitamin Shoppe to local events with free samples of their latest products. One of her favorite organizations she’s worked with so far is the Wounded Warrior Project. With such a meaningful purpose, the W.W.P. helps veterans who need help the most.

According to Heidi, the typical customer at Vitamin Shoppe knows what they’re shopping for before they even enter the store. The most frequent shopper is the fitness buff looking for the latest and greatest products.

What sets Vitamin Shoppe Apart?

Heidi says that Vitamin Shoppe’s biggest struggle is to differentiate themselves from the giants of the industry like GNC. She said one of the biggest differences between Vitamin Shoppe and GNC is that Vitamin Shoppe employees don’t work off commissions. If you have ever been to a GNC, I’m sure you’ve experienced how much of a sales experience it can be. When she was discussing this topic, it was eye opening for me because I was unaware of the commission incentive.
Because Vitamin Shoppe doesn’t work off commissions, people get the products they need without feeling pressured. Some of her best customers are people who have shopped elsewhere and felt like they were “sold things they didn’t need.”

Vitamin Shoppe Rewards Program and Auto Delivery

Vitamin Shoppe has a free rewards program where you earn between 1 and 1.5 points for every dollar you spend at the store depending on your reward tier. For every 125 points you earn, you get $5 credited to your account for future purchases. The points never expire as long as you make one purchase every 12 months.

To stay competitive with companies like Amazon and Walmart, Vitamin Shoppe is offering a new Auto Delivery Service. This is great for people who buy things often and like convenience. With this service comes a 10% discount on your recurring order.

Overall, Vitamin Shoppe carries a great selection of quality products and brands. I was happy to see that they had a lot of the same brands I personally use. They carry products at multiple price points and products for dietary restrictions and allergies. Additionaly, their staff has additional training in nutrition outside of company directed courses. If you have a good idea of what you’re looking for, Vitamin Shoppe can be a great place for you. With a wide variety of products and educated staff there to help, you’re likely to find what you need and save money in the process.

5 Star Nutrition is built around the idea of achieving goals. They have a systematic approach for customer requests and work to help them develop a plan to succeed in their fitness journey.

When you walk in the local store, you can expect to be greeted by one of the 5 Star staff asking about how they can help you. Whether it’s your first time in a nutrition store, or you’re a seasoned veteran, 5 Star Nutrition has something for you.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Emily and Kisaac who are managers at 5 Star.
They start by analyzing your body composition to create a baseline for you to track throughout your fitness journey. They do this for free using an InBody Body Composition Analyzer. The InBody machine measures the electrical impedance throughout your body. This creates an accurate measure overall weight, lean muscle mass, body fat, water weight, BMI, and your basal metabolic rate.
All of these statistics help tailor a plan unique to the individual with a goal in mind. For example: whether you’re trying lose or gain weight, these measures can give you a starting point on how many calories you need to be eating every day. Starting with this number, you can add to or take away from meals in order to reach your ideal composition.

Why this matters in a Nutrition store

In sum, you need to know where you’re at before you can effectively start moving toward your goal. Once you have your measurements and analytics, you can begin to consider if supplementation is right for you.
One thing I really like about 5 Star’s approach to their products is their simplicity. They have two or three different options for whatever you’re looking for. If you’ve been to a nutrition store before, you know how overwhelming, and sometimes crippling, trying to choose a product can be.
If there’s one product in the store that will grab your attention, it’s their protein. They have a reputation for having delicious flavor options in their protein.
This is one area where I am personally a bit critical due to my preference to consume protein which is unflavored and unsweetened. They didn’t have this option on the shelves, but they are always striving to improve their products and selection, so I look forward to checking back in. They carry every product that a regular gym goer would be interested in. Protein powders, pre-workout, metabolic boosters, energy drinks, and more.
Overall, their store is very clean and organized. They have a great selection of protein powders and other supplements without being overwhelming. Their InBody machine provides valuable information to their customers and allows them to tailor a plan to help you achieve goals. One thing to consider is they operate off a commission structure for compensation of their employees. This is not a huge concern for me as many nutrition stores do this however, it is something to keep in mind.

Nutrition World has been serving Chattanooga since 1979. Founded by Ed Jones, Nutrition World has become a gathering place for people interested in health and wellness. Originally a dedicated health food store, they have become one of the most knowledgeable sources for all things related to natural health and nutrition. Today, they’re changing the game by creating a wellness center focused on an integrated approach to health and wellness. They offer a variety of services by a multitude of professionals directed at health education and empowerment.

I had the pleasure of speaking with the co-owner of Nutrition World, Cady. Her journey with health and wellness started at a young age as she was guided by her father Ed, the founder of Nutrition World. She worked at the store throughout high school and developed a love for helping people on their journey toward health. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she returned to the store where she works full-time to this day. She’s completed a master’s degree in Holistic Nutrition and has ambitions to return to school to study acupuncture. One of her passions in life is helping people who suffer from emotional ailments. Through education she empowers people to take control of their health.
Walking into Nutrition World for the first time, you’ll notice the ambiance of health radiating through the building. Instead of focusing solely on selling products, they believe education is most important. They help customers understand underlying reasons why supplementation may be right for them. One of the ways they achieve this is through educating their staff.
Nutrition World brings in educators for weekly classes to educate their staff on the products they carry and other health topics.
Every employee participates in the training sessions.
Additionally, any employee who has been with them at least three months has the option to become a certified health coach through the store. This allows them to further their education and help customers more effectively.

Nutrition World, a one stop shop for everything health!

Nutrition World is a great place to check out if you’re new to health and wellness and don’t know where to start. They work directly with customers to create a well-rounded plan to achieve goals. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, clean up your diet, or change your lifestyle, their membership can be a great option.
In the future, Nutrition World is excited to expand their Wellness Corner and create a one stop shop for healing.
Overall, Nutrition World has a wide variety of quality products and an educated staff to help point you in the right direction. They stand out from the competition with a commitment to continuing education and service excellence. They have all the things I look for in a nutrition store and more. I’m excited to see their Wellness Corner develop over time!

Which nutrition store is right for you?

Vitamin Shoppe, 5 Star Nutrition, and Nutrition World are great resources for helping people achieve their goals. I learned so much in writing this article and appreciate how each store is different yet driven by the same purpose: helping people on their journey towards health.
Vitamin Shoppe has a great selection of products and a rewards program that can benefit those who are regularly buying the same products. 5 Star Nutrition’s program is great for measuring progress and achieving goals. Nutrition World is creating a unique center for all things health and emphasizes education by investing in their team.
I recommend going to each of the stores to check them out for yourself. Like I said before, nutrition can be overwhelming for many people. Especially if you’re unfamiliar with basic physiology and biochemistry.
In our office, we get asked everyday about various products and specific supplements. This ensures people are getting what they need, without wasting their time or money.
One final note: your nutritional needs should be met primarily through eating a well-balanced, whole foods diet. Supplementation is beneficial for filling nutritional gaps and complementing your diet. Supplementation is not intended to replace real food. If you have any questions, please send us an e-mail or schedule an appointment to talk more specifically about your health goals.
